Ford is currently developing a hybrid version of the Mustang, according to a report from Ford Authority.
A Ford spokesperson told Car and Driver: “We said in 2024 that by the end of the decade we expect to offer hybrid powertrains across the entire Ford Blue lineup in North America. Beyond this, we don’t comment on speculation about future products.”
The report says that the Blue Oval company is actively working on a hybrid version of the current S650-generation Mustang, which it has code-named S650E. There’s no timetable for when the hybrid Stang will arrive, or even confirmation that it will reach production, but prototypes are apparently being tested already.

In recent years, Ford, like so many other automakers, has made and subsequently backtracked from lofty goals of EV adoption. One claim, made back in 2024, was that every internal-combustion model in Ford’s lineup would include hybrid assistance of some kind by 2030. Citing sources familiar with the matter, a new report from Ford Authority says the Blue Oval is working to make good on that promise and is actively developing a hybrid version of the Mustang.

According to the report, development is currently underway for a hybrid version of the current-generation S650 Mustang, which it has internally code-named the S650E. Unfortunately, the report doesn’t give confirmation for what sort of hybrid powertrain it would have. With no timeframe for when to expect the hybrid Stang, there’s no guarantee that Ford will actually bring the model to production, but according to the report, the project is far enough into development that prototype mules are being tested.
Talk of a hybrid Mustang has come and gone for years, stretching back to 2017, when then-CEO Mark Fields announced Ford would start production of a hybrid Mustang. That obviously never came to fruition, but the rumors persisted. Ford’s current CEO, Jim Farley, suggested in 2023 that a hybrid Mustang was in the cards, before doubling down on the sentiment a year later.
The current Mustang was introduced in 2022, so it’s just about due for a mid-cycle refresh. With Ford recently confirming that the internal-combustion Mustang will live into the 2030s, that opens the door for a hybrid option down the line. Even if there isn’t a huge demand for the car now, if the past few years have proved anything, it’s that customer opinions can change with the wind.

Car and Driver reached out to Ford for comment on the report and received the following reply from a spokesperson: “We said in 2024 that by the end of the decade we expect to offer hybrid powertrains across the entire Ford Blue lineup in North America. Beyond this, we don’t comment on speculation about future products.”
